I put a question out about Mabel Flanagan - and I got a reply - but you can read it for yourself. |
| In answer to your question, Mavericklady, Mabel
Flanagan spent the last year of her life worrying that the government was
going to take her home away from her. Too many times, she expressed
fear of what would happen to her if they did take her home. Later in
that same year, she was diagnosed with cancer and her family moved her bed to her living room so that her last view could be of the New River she loved. Even after her diagnosis of cancer, she was constantly wanting to give money to the Sisters of the River, which we constantly refused but she INSISTED it was her way, and the only way she had, to help save her home on the New River. (It was only after her family assured us that Mabel saw it as a way to protect her home, did we accept the money Mabel insisted we take once) On the day the Sisters of the River took a petition bearing 845 signatures and 852 comment forms opposing the land grab scheme, and hand delivered them in person to the highway department in Charleston (WV), Mabel Flanagan sent money, insisting the least she could do was to buy the Sisters of the River lunch on that day! I guess, looking back, we'd call Mabel an "honorary" Sister of the River? I'm honored to have known Mabel Flanagan. I only regret the circumstances which caused her to walk into my life, but she did so, and made my life better by having been part of it. For this, I'll be forever grateful.
