Sisters Of The River

I put a question out about Mabel Flanagan - and I got a reply - but you can read it for yourself.

In answer to your question, Mavericklady, Mabel Flanagan spent the last year of her life worrying that the government was going to take her home away from her.  Too many times, she expressed fear of what would happen to her if they did take her home.  Later in that same year, she was diagnosed
with cancer and her family moved her bed to her living room so that her last view could be of the New River she loved.

Even after her diagnosis of cancer, she was constantly wanting to give money to the Sisters of the River, which we constantly refused but she INSISTED it was her way, and the only way she had, to help save her home on the New River.  (It was only after her family assured us that Mabel saw it as a way to protect her home, did we accept the money Mabel insisted we take once)

On the day the Sisters of the River took  a petition bearing 845 signatures and 852 comment forms opposing the land grab scheme, and hand delivered them in person to the highway department in Charleston (WV), Mabel Flanagan sent money, insisting the least she could do was to buy the Sisters of the River lunch on that day!

I guess, looking back, we'd call Mabel an "honorary" Sister of the River?

I'm honored to have known Mabel Flanagan.  I only regret the circumstances which caused her to walk into my life, but she did so, and made my life better by having been part of it.  For this, I'll be forever grateful.

MAVERICKLADY COMMENTS:
Guess that answered my question.

LIES AND "MISTAKES" GO HAND IN HAND

FOR OVER TWO YEARS I HAVE ATTENDED THE NEW RIVER PARKWAY BOARD MEETINGS. I AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO JUST ONE FALSEHOOD AFTER ANOTHER, MEETING AFTER MEETING.

IN THE MAY 2001 PUBLIC PORTION OF THE NEW RIVER PARKWAY MEETING, I READ A LETTER I HAD RECEIVED FROM THE WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS. A HIGHWAY OFFICIAL WAS PRESENT IN THAT MEETING AND ASSURED ME THAT EVERYTHING IN THAT LETTER WAS TRUE. THAT HIGHWAY LETTER, TO ME AND DATED APRIL 6TH, 2001, CONTAINED A STATEMENT "...EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF ENTOMOLOGY HAVE INDICATED THAT THE ROAD (THE PROPOSED NEW RIVER PARKWAY ) WILL HAVE NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT TO THE HELLGRAMMITE POPULATION IN THIS AREA."

THE HIGHWAY OFFICIAL AGAIN SAID THIS STATEMENT WAS TRUE AND TOLD ME MY PROBLEM WAS THAT I JUST DIDN'T LIKE THEIR ANSWERS! IT IS A BOLD AND BLATANT "MISREPRESENTATION" OF THE TRUTH! (WE REDNECKS" WOULD CALL IT A DIRTY BLACK "LIE"!) FOR, I HAD PERSONALLY CALLED ONE OF THE EXPERTS NAMED IN THAT HIGHWAY LETTER AND THAT EXPERT TOLD ME THAT NOT ONLY WAS THAT HIGHWAY LETTER "NOT" TRUE, THAT EXPERT TOLD ME HE HAD DEFINITELY TOLD BOTH VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE CONSULTANTS AND THE WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS THAT HIS STUDIES, THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT CITED IN THAT LETTER, DID NOT PERTAIN TO THE PARKWAY PROJECT! THE EXPERT EVEN STATED HE COULD NOT BELIEVE THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE WOULD ALLOW SUCH A ROAD TO BE BUILT SO CLOSE TO THE NEW RIVER!

EVEN AFTER "CATCHING" THESE AGENCIES IN THIS CURRENT FALSEHOOD, MR. DOUG TOLBERT, PLANNING COORDINATOR FOR THE NEW RIVER PARKWAY AUTHORITY, HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY QUOTED AS TELLING PEOPLE THIS WAS "JUST A MISTAKE"!

WHAT WAS A "MISTAKE"? THESE AGENCIES GETTING CAUGHT NOT DOING THE PROPER STUDIES TO PROTECT OUR FISH FOOD CHAIN CYCLE AND OUR VERY CURRENTLY ABUNDANT FISH IN THE NEW RIVER? OR, THESE AGENCIES FALSELY APPLYING OTHER STUDIES TO THIS PROJECT IN THESE AGENCIES' BLIND UNRELENTING QUEST TO TAKE PEOPLE'S PRIVATE PROPERTY, HOMES, FARMS, CAMPS THAT HAVE BEEN AND ARE THE GREATEST PROTECTORS OF OUR CURRENT NEW RIVER FISH FOOD CHAIN AND IT'S MOST VALUABLE AQUATIC LIFE?

I AND EVERY TRULY CONCERNED PROTECTOR OF OUR GREAT NATURAL RESOURCES, CURRENTLY SO ABUNDANT HEREIN OUR NEW RIVER, SHOULD BE MORE THAN DISSATISFIED WITH THE ANSWERS AND ACTIONS OF THESE AGENCIES THAT STAND ONLY TO DESTROY OUR NEW RIVER AND IT'S ABUNDANT AQUATIC LIFE!
